7 Tasks Business Mums Can Let Go This Autumn

What to Let Go of This Season

There’s a moment every autumn when I look at my to-do list and realise half of it isn’t really there because it matters. It’s there because I’d feel guilty if it wasn’t.

Guilt is sneaky like that. It doesn’t shout. It just quietly adds “one more thing” to your day, and before you know it you’re answering emails at 10pm, saying yes to a bake sale you don’t have time for, and wondering why you’re so tired.

If you’re a mum running a business, you get a double dose. There’s mum guilt (am I doing enough for the kids?) and business guilt (am I doing enough to grow?). Both pull at the same few hours.

So this season, before the Christmas rush really kicks in, I want to give you permission to put a few things down.

Here are seven guilt-driven tasks you can let go of, starting today.

Replying to every message straight away

Posting on social media every single day

Saying yes to everything at school (and everywhere else)

You don’t owe anyone an instant reply. Not customers, not group chats, not the school WhatsApp. Pick one or two set times a day to check messages and let the rest wait. Most things that feel urgent really aren’t.
Showing up matters, but showing up every day out of guilt leads to burnout, not sales. Three good posts a week will do more for your business than seven rushed ones. Batch them on one day and let the rest of the week breathe.
The PTA, the bake sale, the extra playdate, the “quick favour”. It’s okay to say “not this time”. A kind no protects the time your family and your business actually need.

Working "just a bit more" in the evenings

This is the big one for me. I used to think, “just 10 minutes to finish this and I’m done.” But 10 minutes usually turned into 90 minutes, on work that could easily have waited until tomorrow.

When you don’t have a clear end to your workday, your brain never fully switches off. Try a simple “switch off” moment: close the laptop, write down tomorrow’s top three, and step into evening mode. The work will still be there in the morning. You’ll be in much better shape to do it.

Making everything perfect before you share it

Keeping up with what other business mums are doing

Doing it all on your own, all the time

Perfect products that never launch don’t help anyone. Done and out there beats perfect and hidden. Your customers want something that helps them, not something polished to within an inch of its life.
Someone else’s launch, someone else’s big month, someone else’s beautifully organised home office. Comparison is guilt in disguise. Mute, unfollow or simply scroll past. Your business, your pace.
Asking for help isn’t failing. Whether it’s your partner taking the school run twice a week, a friend having the kids for an afternoon, or a supportive group of mums who get it, you were never meant to carry it all alone.

How to let go (without feeling worse)

4 steps to let go of guilt-driven tasks: write it down, ask what's the worst that could happen, drop it, shrink it or delay it, notice how you feel
Letting go can feel uncomfortable at first. That little voice will pop up and say “but what if…”. Here’s a simple way to quiet it:
Write down one task: from your list that’s driven by guilt, not need.
Ask yourself: What’s the worst that would happen if I didn’t do this?” (Usually: nothing much.)
Drop it, shrink it or delay it. Not everything has to go completely. Sometimes doing it less often is enough.
Notice how you feel  after a week. Lighter, usually.

You don’t have to let go of all seven at once. Pick one this week. Just one.

A lighter season starts with a lighter load

If your head feels like it’s holding a hundred tabs open, you’re not alone, and it’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign you need a simpler system.

That’s exactly why I created The Lighter Load Method: Business Mum Edition. It walks you through clearing your head, anchoring your day, buffering the interruptions and keeping it going, including a weekly reset, protected work windows and a gentle evening “switch off” routine.
